“A Park Is A Refuge”: Letter From The Executive Director

Just over a year and a half ago I started out in my role as the Executive Director of the Conservancy. I remember how eager I was to celebrate the opening of the new HGTV Overlook and to start planning the 2nd Annual Summer Picnic in the Park. Needless to say those events did not take place due to COVID. Even though these particular events were not able to happen, Lakeshore Park has been a popular site for engagements, birthdays, weddings, church services, meetings and many other gatherings over the last year and the Park has seen record numbers of visitors during this time.

Last summer I met with a lovely elderly woman who walks the Park almost daily. She wanted to adopt a bench in the park and she wanted the plaque to read, “A Park is a Refuge.” What could I say other than, “yes it is and thank you!” The Park had given her a place to go everyday like so many others who needed and still need a peaceful and safe place to exercise and enjoy the beauty of nature. Lakeshore plays such an important role in the physical and mental wellbeing of this community.

The Park needs your support to continue to provide that restorative landscape for all to enjoy. The increased use of the Park puts a strain not only on the landscape but also on the staff who cares for the park. Please consider making a gift today to the Conservancy to help provide continued care and maintenance for our beautiful park.

Lastly, I invite you to come visit the park if you haven’t had the opportunity to lately. If you aren’t physically able to take a walk in the park, please take a drive through the park or come and sit and enjoy the view from the Overlook. Lakeshore Park is a true gem in the heart of Knoxville and it is the perfect setting for whatever you need right now.
